PROTECTION through LEGAL PROTECTIONS

Many workers hesitate before speaking up about workplace issues. Even when a concern affects multiple people, workers may worry about being seen as difficult or about possible retaliation. Labor law recognizes this concern.

In the United States, workers have legal protections when they act together to address workplace conditions. These protections allow workers to discuss issues with coworkers, share experiences, and raise concerns collectively. The reason these protections exist is simple: workplace problems often affect more than one person.

When workers act together, they are better able to identify shared concerns and address them as a group. Collective rights help create the space for those conversations and actions to happen. They reinforce an important idea in union workplaces: workers do not have to face workplace problems alone.
