A classified staff member will be submitting a public comment at the January 22 Highline College Board meeting calling for greater transparency through recorded and publicly posted board meetings.
During public comment, she will ask those attending, either in person or on Zoom, to show support by using a reaction or emoji in the meeting chat.
This show of support is meant to demonstrate how important transparency, accountability, and public access are to students and employees.
State law encourages public agencies to record regular governing body meetings and make those recordings available online. Recording meetings is a simple step that would improve access for employees, students, and community members who cannot attend live.
Public comment occurs at the beginning of the meeting. Participation would take approximately 15 minutes total, assuming the meeting starts on time at 11 a.m. Members are welcome to attend just for public comment and leave afterward if needed.
Members who care about transparency and access are encouraged to attend the January 22 board meeting and be ready to participate during public comment, either in person or via Zoom. Showing visible support, even briefly, helps reinforce the message that open governance matters.
