Hello DOR represented members,
I’m Ashley Chipman, your state-wide DOR representative, and I want to remind you of what qualifies as a change in working conditions so if you ever find yourself wondering whether something you’re experiencing is questionable or actionable, you’ll have a clear reference.
- Changes to your wages
- Changes to your work schedule
- Any changes directly affecting your day-to-day duties or activities
In addition to this reminder, I want to take the opportunity to share the Union’s position regarding meetings with management.
If you are facing any of the following situations, please reach out to myself and the DOR leadership team (your shop stewards) using your personal email to ensure your rights are protected:
- If you anticipate being coached or disciplined based on your performance.
- If your conversations with your supervisor feel one-sided or unproductive.
- If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable during the meeting.
My final advice is to strongly encourage you to take notes during all meetings, whether in person or virtual, especially when expectations are being set for you. By doing this, you create a clear record and protect yourself from misunderstandings. It demonstrates professionalism and provides continuity and most importantly, it can support your position if issues arise.
In situations such as performance reviews, HR matters, or disputes, having documented evidence of what was discussed can help protect you from unfair criticism or blame. When you receive a verbal directive from your manager or supervisor, consider following up in writing if you feel it is necessary.
Example follow-up email approach, “Hi [Manager], I just wanted to confirm my understanding from our conversation earlier today: [“x”]. Please let me know if I’ve missed or misunderstood anything so I can move forward accordingly.”
